Welcome to the Law & Science website.

About this Project

An increasing number of court cases today concern scientific or technological matters such as environmental issues, or in the case of medical accidents or alleged false accusations, evidence based on science and technology is at issue. In these cases, scientists and technicians are sometimes called as expert witnesses to the court, and examined by legal experts such as judges, prosecutors, and lawyers. The question here is to what extent these legal experts understand the act of “science”, and whether scientists and technicians are aware of the way they understand scientific evidence.

Many of the legal experts and scientists who have been involved in these so-called “scientific trials” have raised questions about discrepancies between science / technology and law.  This problem becomes more complicated particularly when unestablished so-called “scientific uncertainty” (simply put, “what is not understood well”) is introduced to the society as technology,

As our society is greatly influenced by judicial judgments, it is important to enable legal decision making, where wisdom of both law and science is properly integrated. Aiming to make it possible, we study in this project how legal experts and scientists / technicians can understand and discuss with each other better in settings where legal decision making is required.
